Eligibility for Admission
Any Degree Graduate from any discipline is eligible for admission.
Admission Procedure
Candidates intending to enrol for admission to the course shall submit the prescribed application form duly filled in on or before the prescribed last date along with the Admission and Tuition fee of Rs. 6,000/-. The application form can obtained after paying a fee of Rs. 300/- by Demand Draft drawn on any nationalised bank payable to the Registrar, National Law School of India University at Bangalore.
All admissions will ordinarily be completed by 30th June of the academic year concerned and the course will commence from 1st July of each year.
Provided that in exceptional cases the Director may permit admission till 31st August of the year concerned on payment of a late fee of Rs. 200/-
Duration, continuation and termination of the course
The duration of the course shall be for a period of two academic years.
The maximum period prescribed for completion of all the requirements for the award of the Degree is five academic years from the year of admission.
Every candidate given admission shall pay the prescribed tuition fee for the first year and second year at the beginning of each academic year. If a candidate is required to continue the course beyond the first two years on account of his/her not passing the subjects prescribed, he/she will be allowed to continued for a further duration of three academic years or till he/she completes all subjects, whichever is earlier by paying a continuation fee as prescribed for each year.
At the end of the fifth academic year, if the candidate has not passed the examination, the admission stands automatically cancelled and the student may seek admission afresh.

Teaching Methods
The normal methods for imparting education in the subjects will be through correspondence and distance education techniques. Towards this objective, the NLSIU will organise the reading materials in various modules in each of the subjects and send the same to the candidates with instructions to study, at periodical intervals as determined. The candidate shall adhere to the time-table indicated for answering the problems indicated at the end of each module. Project-work assignments will be allotted to the students in each of the subjects at the beginning of each year and necessary guidance on research and writing shall also be given. One project shall be assigned for each subject.
If found necessary, contact classes and seminars may be organised at Bangalore and at such other places as may be decided form time to time. However prior to the annual written examination, viva, a concluding workshop will be held in Bangalore.

The mode of calculation of the CGPA will be as follows:
Grade Value multiplied by Subject Credit = Sum Grade Value
Total Sum Grade Value divided by Total Subject Credit = CGPA
The overall CGPA will be calculated based on the average of the Part-I and the Part-II results. Students are required to obtain an aggregate of 3.00 for a pass in the Course.
Passing minimum, Repeat examination and Promotion
In order to be declared successful in any subject, a candidate shall secure any of the first five grades mentioned above. Those who secure an 'F' grade shall be deemed to have failed in the subject concerned.
A candidate securing 'F' grade/or a candidate who has completed one academic year may take the supplementary examination subject to eligibility criteria. The supplementary examination will be for 50 marks and in respect of the remaining 50 marks, the marks obtained earlier in the Assignments/Projects will be taken for consideration to determine the grade.
Promotion from first year to second year shall be automatic irrespective of the fact whether or not the candidate appeared/passed all the subjects of the first year. However, before taking the second year examination, he/she is required to pass all the subjects of the first year. By paying the second year fee of Rs. 5,000/- at the end of the first academic year, a candidate can obtain the second year study material in advance.
Candidates failing to pass all the subjects at the end of the two years will be permitted to continue to be on the rolls of the NLSIU for the subsequent three academic years on payment of the prescribed continuation fee of Rs. 2500/- for each of the three years.
Award of the degree
A candidate shall be eligible for the award of the M.B.L. Degree only when he has successfully passed all the prescribed ten subjects with a total of 40 credits and obtained a C.G.P.A. of three.
Recognition of Local institutions
The Director on the recommendations of the Distance Education Council may recognise and permit such local institutions for purposes of giving coaching to the students admitted in their areas. Collection of local fee, if any and arrangements shall be the responsibility of the local institutions concerned. However, the NLSIU will not be responsible for the maintenance of standards of coaching and the concerned institutions will only help the NLSIU in administrative matters like collection the applications for admissions etc. The Director shall also have the power to withdraw unilaterally such recognition if it is found necessary, at any time.
Post Graduate Diploma in Human Rights
1. Eligibility for Admission
A candidate for admission to the Diploma in Human Rights Law shall have passed a Bachelor's degree of any recognized University or an equivalent qualification as approved by the Distance Education Council.
2. Admission Procedure
Candidates intending to enrol for admission to the Diploma shall submit the application form duly filled in on or before the prescribed last date.
All admissions will ordinarily be completed by 30th July of the academic year concerned and the course will commence form 1st August of each year.
Provided that in exceptional cases the Director may permit admission till 31st August of the concerned academic year on payment of late fee of Rs. 200/-.
3. Duration, continuation and Termination of the course
The duration of the course shall be a period of one an academic year. The maximum period prescribed for completion of all the requirements for the award of the Diploma is three academic years from the year of admission.
Every candidate admitted to the course shall pay the prescribed fees at the time of admission. If a candidate is required to continue the course beyond the first academic year because of his/her non-fulfilment of the prescribed requirements for the award of the Diploma, he/she will be continued for the subsequent two academic years or till at the requirements are completed whichever is earlier by paying a continuation fee as prescribed for each year.
At the end of the third academic year, if the candidate fails to fulfil all the requirements for the award of the Diploma, the admission stands automatically cancelled.
4. Teaching Methods
Unless otherwise decided by the Distance Education Council, the method of imparting education in the subjects will be through distance education techniques. Towards this objective the NLSIU shall provide a detailed syllabus and comprehensive reading list for each of the four papers, basic documents on human rights law and instructions to study and conduct research in respect of project assignments.
Each candidate is required to write a project report in respect of each of the four papers on a topic assigned by the NLSIU in consultation with the candidate.
Every candidate shall submit all the project reports before he/she appears for the written examination. Candidate permitted to continue the course beyond the first academic year by the NLSIU in accordance with Regulation No. 3 above will also be required to submit the project papers before being allowed to take the written examination in that subject.
5. Scheme of Evaluation
Each Paper shall be evaluated for a maximum of 100 marks in accordance with the following scheme of distribution:

The results shall be declared after tabulating the marks secured in each of the three segments of the examination on a graded assessment, namely:

The candidates securing the 'Distinction' or 'Satisfactory' grades in each of the segments of all the four papers shall be deemed to have completed the course successfully and will be conferred the 'Diploma in Human Rights Law' in the ensuing Convocation.
The candidates whose performances are adjudged 'Not Satisfactory' shall repeat the concerned segment of the paper and obtain the 'Satisfactory' grade: Provided candidates who fail to obtain satisfactory grade in the 'written examination' shall take the written examination at the end of the following academic year along with the regular candidates.
Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics
Eligibility for admission
A candidate for admission to the Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics (P.G. Dip. ML & E) shall have passed a Bachelor's degree of any recognised University or an equivalent qualification as approved by the Distance Education Committee. Those who are studying in the final year degree or awaiting results can be provisionally registered for the course subject to the condition that at the time of appearing for the P.G. Dip. in ML&E Examination he/she should have obtained the eligible Degree qualification.
Admission Procedure
Candidates intending to enrol the admission to the Diploma shall submit the prescribed application form duly filled in the along with the original Degree/Provisional certificate and an attested copy of the same on or before the prescribed last date. Soon after the completion of the admission process the Degree/Provisional certificate will be returned to the candidate.
All admissions will ordinarily be completed by 30th June of the academic year concerned and the course will commence from 1st July of each year.
Provided that in exceptional cases the Director may permit admission till 31st July of the concerned academic year on payment of a late fee Rs. 200/-.

If a candidate is required to continue the course beyond the first academic year because of he/she will be continued for the subsequent two academic years or till all the requirements are completed for each year.
At the end of the academic year if the candidate fails to fulfil all the requirements for the award of the requirements for the award of the Diploma, the admission stands automatically cancelled.

Each candidate is required to submit a project report on a topic assigned by the University in consultation with the concerned Teachers as identified by the Coordinator. However, he may choose the topic in any of the courses prescribed below.
Every candidate shall submit the project report before he/she appears for the written examination. The candidate shall fulfil this eligibility criterion even if he/she desire to take the written examination in one or more subjects. If the candidate is permitted to continue the course beyond the first academic year by the University in accordance with Regulation No. 3 above will also be required to submit the project paper before being allowed to take the written examination.

The candidates securing the 'Distinction' or 'Satisfactory' grades in all the four papers and project assignment shall be deemed to have completed the course successfully and will be conferred the 'Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics' in the ensuing Convocation. The Candidates whose performance is adjudged 'Not Satisfactory' shall repeat the concerned paper/project assignment and obtain the 'Satisfactory' grade.
Provided candidates who fail to obtain satisfactory grade in the 'written examination, may take the written examination either at the end of the following academic year along with the regular candidates or during 'supplementary examinations' to be organised from time to time.
Post Graduate Diploma in Environmental Law
About the Course
The Post-Graduate Diploma in Environmental Law is a one year distance education programme open to graduates of all disciplines. The course is designed to inform, educate and equip the student in the understanding and application of different aspects of this frontier area of legal knowledge. The course on Environmental Law is specially designed to service the long felt need of strengthening the legal capacity of Administrators, Activists, Adjudicators and Academics concerned with Environmental Governance in India.
Admission Criteria
A candidate for admission to the PO Diploma in Environmental Law shall have passed a Bachelor's degree of any recognised University or an equivalent qualification as approved by the Distance Education Committee of National Law School of India University.

Course content and scheme of evaluation
The courses in the programme are so designed as to focus on environmental administration, nature and extent of compliance with environmental obligations and environmental justice.

A fortnight long seminar, that would provide deeper insight into the subject for the student, would be organised at NLSIU every year, before the commencement of the examinations.
