To be able to meaningfully experiment with such a diverse set of goals and strategies, the law school should have great autonomy in taking academic decisions, flexibility in operationalising the agenda and resources to support creative and innovative experiments. NUJS, unlike most other law schools, does have full academic freedom to innovate and adapt. It is a University where the faculty by and large decide what to do and how to do in pursuing its mandate. It is professionally managed in so far as its governing bodies consist mostly of law teachers, lawyers and judges. It is conceived as a small residential school with about 100 talented students in each year selected on the basis of competitive merit. Infrastructure and financial resources hopefully will grow responding to the needs though it is very modest to begin with. The Faculty is relatively hardworking and committed and are trained to unlearn and re-learn in partnership with scholars of other disciplines and organizations involved in justice promotion outside the legal profession. Of course, there is no model to imitate, nor any leader to dictate. It is a culture of sharing of common concerns, the desire to evolve a justice-oriented educational system and the commitment to make sacrifices in the process, which the NUJS Faculty can claim as their credentials for the challenging tasks proposed.
