A. General
NLU is extremely keen and concerned about the development of skills in the legal education curriculum. With the advent of WTO and GATT, the whole scenario of litigation is fast changing. At the same time people at large have become more conscious towards their legal rights. Keeping in mind the fast changing nature of litigation and a variety of challenges posed to the profession of law in the twenty first century, NLU is all set for producing lawyers who can not only meet the ever-growing challenges in the profession but also inculcate in them a sense of social responsibility. The students of this University are intended to be groomed and sensitized towards the problems of poor and vulnerable sections of the society in such a way that they will not only stand up to face the challenges but also prove to be the accredited and undisputed leaders of the society at large. To achieve this, the Clinical Program in NLU has scheduled to cover a wide range of activities, which include simulation exercises, working on real socio-legal problems. Legal Aid Clinic, consultancy, legislative drafting, law reforms, seminars and number of other programs. The wide spectrum of the Clinical Programs can advantageously be enlisted below though it need hardly be said that they are only inclusive and not exhaustive:
In order to achieve the above objectives, the institution has been offering a wide range of opportunities, which are both compulsory and optional to the students. Among the compulsory segment are the Moot Court and Mock Trials, Project Assignments, the Placement Training besides the Clinical Course, which every student has to undergo. The optional segment includes Legal Aid Support Activities, Law Reforms Projects, and courses on Human Rights. The University has also established a full-fledged Legal Aid Clinic with a full time Director of Clinical Education to organize, conduct and coordinate various activities to carry out the above objectives. The Clinic is regularly organizing legal awareness camps and seminars in rural areas, publishing and distributing books of common interest and also advising prospective litigants about the alternative mode of dispute redressal.
B. Trial Advocacy
This is an optional simulation course with main focus on preparation for 'Trial Proceedings & Strategies' both for civil as well as criminal matters. Amongst all relevant essentials, special emphasis is laid on the techniques of drafting pleadings, examination-in-chief, cross-examination and re-examination of witnesses, marshalling of facts, application of law, seeking relief through injunctions including interim relief and equip the students with the art in advancing arguments.
C. Appellate Advocacy
This again in an optional simulation course with a focus on drafting memorandum of appeals, revisions etc. in both criminal and civil cases, writ matters, techniques of marshalling and analyzing the judgments/orders of the trial court in light of evidence on record, application of law, and advancing arguments before various appellate forums.
